Air China reports 2009 net profit up 155%

China’s national flag carrier Air China said Thursday it swung back into the black last year on the back of lower fuel costs and higher passenger volumes.

The country’s largest carrier said net profits jumped 155 percent to 5 billion yuan (736 million U.S. dollars), compared with a net loss of 9 billion yuan in 2008 during the global economic downturn.

Revenue dropped 3.54 percent year on year to 51 billion yuan and earnings per share jumped 154.55 percent to 0.42 yuan, said its annual report filed with the Shanghai Stock Exchange.

The company said operating expenses dropped 10.38 percent to 48.9 billion yuan in 2009, with aviation fuel costs falling by 8.15 billion yuan.

The booming profits were also attributable to a recovery in domestic air travel. Passenger volume rose 14.23 percent to 41.28 million with domestic travellers increasing 19 percent to 33.37 million.

The company’s stock rose 0.71 percent to 14.17 yuan per share Thursday.

Shuangliu Airport in Chengdu ranked sixth among 166 airports

Shuangliu Airport in Chengdu ranked sixth among 166 airports in terms of passenger turnover in 2009, figures from the China Aviation Administration show.

“It is rare to see such a quick move for the company with only two years of preparation,” said a China Eastern employee with the company’s engineering and technical maintenance base in Xi’an, Northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, who refused to give his name.

China Eastern had an agency in Chengdu for years, but it was sparsely staffed and hard pressed to compete with Air China, the market leader, the China Eastern employee said.

In 2009, Air China held 33 percent of the Chengdu air market share, and China Eastern ranked fourth in terms of transport capacity from Chengdu to Beijing, according to a report by China Merchants Securities.

“The move can be regarded as the carriers’ interpenetrating strategy,” said Yao Jun, an analyst with China Merchants Securities.

Yao said Air China’s takeover of Shenzhen Airlines last month will give Air China further reach in southern cities where China Southern holds large market share.

World Bank lends US$250 million to improve roads in Ningxia

The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors approved on May 13 a loan of $250 million to China to help improve the road infrastructure in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in support of more balanced social and economic development.

Located in the western interior, Ningxia is one of the poorest provinces in China with about 10 percent of its people living below the poverty line. Ningxia’s lack of transport accessibility coupled with its landlocked status has hindered its social and economic development and prevented it from meeting its development potential. The Ningxia Government is making great efforts to develop and improve its road infrastructure to better connect the major industrial areas with urban areas, and link these areas to the provincial and national expressway network.

The Ningxia Highway Project will support the construction of a key transport infrastructure corridor to provide one of the missing links in the expressway network, and the rehabilitation of a key national highway to connect major developing areas. In addition, the Bank will support part of Ningxia’s Local Road Improvement Program, which addresses the needs of the poor and disadvantaged people.

“Through the project, we hope to help enhance the quality of transport infrastructure and services for the people in Ningxia, so that they can have better access to economic opportunities and improve their living conditions,” said World Bank Transport Specialist Deng Fei, who is in charge of the project.

China Qinfa to buy 2 bulk carriers for $69m

China Qinfa Group, a leading non- State-owned coal trader on China’s mainland, said Sunday it had signed shipbuilding contracts to pay $69 million for construction of two 82,000-DWT bulk carriers.

In a statement filed to the Hong Kong stock exchange, China Qinfa said two of its wholly-owned subsidiaries — namely Harbor Well and Merit Sino — had each signed a contract with the Guangzhou Longxue Shipbuilding company, owned by the China State Shipbuilding Corporation. Each of the contract was worth $34.5 million.

Qinfa said the cost would be funded partly by bank lending and partly by the company’s internal financial resources.

The company said the purchasing of two bulk carriers was “consistent with the Group’s medium-term strategy to improve the overall efficiency of the Group’s fleet.”

Qinfa also said it was a suitable time for the construction of two new vessels since current construction cost was about 50 percent less than the highest level in 2008.

Air China delays flights to Europe due to new volcano eruption

Air China, the nation’s flag international carrier, announced here Saturday that it has delayed some of its European flights due to the new Icelandic volcano eruption that had spewed a huge ash cloud and again disrupted air traffic in the region.

Flight CA907 from Beijing to San Paulo, which stops by Madrid, and flight CA967 from Beijing to Milan were delayed, said Air China.

The company did not say when the flights will resume.

The latest eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull since Friday has posed threat once again to air traffic in Europe. In northern Spain, sixteen airports were closed as the ash cloud blew south.
